Later in the year James added his bandmates, The Moondogs (later Nautical Nation) and debuted at Austin’s famed, Paramount Theatre (SXSW 2017) . They then played at San Antonio’s San Jose MissionFest for the Fiesta closing concert. About Blue Apollo:
Blue Apollo is an alternative band based in Dallas, Texas that was originally formed by Luke Nassar, Jeremiah Jensen, and Rodman Steele during their time at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts. The now four-piece band brings together a wide variety of influences from John Mayer to Stevie Wonder, creating new sounds by combining the emotion of a singer-songwriter and the grit of a blues guitarist. With smooth tenor vocals from Nassar and the groove of Steele and Jensen’s rhythm section, the result is somewhere between indie-pop, blues, and soul.
Luke and Jeremiah wrote the first Blue Apollo songs in the summer of 2014 and recorded them as demos at Luke’s family home in Austin, Texas. Luke would sing and play acoustic guitar and Jeremiah would play Cajon (box drum). After a few more years of school, they set out to become a full-fledged band, adding Rodman Steele on bass, and Jean Paul Labastida on lead guitar. Early shows were met with great success as a fan base quickly grew throughout SMU’s campus and beyond. As the band’s sound matures, it takes on many of the bluesy elements of John Mayer, the mellow groove and clean sound of Young the Giant and the danceability of early Maroon 5.
With the release of Blue Apollo’s first studio EP in April 2016, the band triggered some big shows that included opening for Nelly in Moody Coliseum, American Aquarium at Trees Dallas, and Cherub at Rhodes College. The EP was also added to rotation at 67 different CMJ radio stations across the country.
Blue Apollo released two singles, “Bite the Bullet” and “Circles” in the summer of 2017, and is currently working on a new EP, which they will be recording in Nashville in January 2018.
